Things to do

City Of Lisbon

Lisbon is just 15 km from Quinta do Scoto and can be reached easily either by car or by train. We recommend travelling by train to avoid any problems with traffic and parking, especially since Meleças station is only a 10 minute walk away from where on weekdays you can take a 30 minute train ride into the heart of Lisbon. At weekends, trains run from Rio de Mouro which is 2 km away and we are very happy to run you to the station (we can also run you to Meleças station if you don't fancy the walk!). You can also catch a train all the way through to the Expo '98 site where there are museums, shops and Europe’s largest Oceanarium. For things to do and see in Lisbon, go to http://www.atl-turismolisboa.pt.

Sintra National Palace

Quinta do Scoto is only 10 km from the historic town of Sintra which is a must-see place for visitors to the area. You can reach Sintra by train from Meleças station on weekdays and from Rio de Mouro station at weekends or it is a 10 minute drive away. For more information about Sintra, go to http://www.travel-in-portugal.com/Sintra.

Every day, trains run from Meleças station up to Mafra and Obidos in the north, or you can get there with a very pleasant drive through some lovely Portuguese countryside. Mafra is home to the enormous gothic Mafra royal palace and Obidos is a beautiful ancient walled city. For more information, see http://www.golisbon.com/portugal/cities/mafra.html.

Cascais & Estoril are located on the coast some 20 km south of the Quinta and are worth visiting for their shops, restaurants, cafes and beaches. For more information, see http://www.portugalvirtual.pt/_tourism/costadelisboa/estoril/index.html.

Guincho Beach

There are many beaches within a 30 minute car ride from the Quinta. As well as the lively and popular beaches in Cascais and Estoril, slightly further north there is Guincho's long beach with big surfing waves (home to the World and European surfing championships). Other beaches lining the Atlantic coast include Praia das Maçãs, a large sandy beach which can be reached by a tram that runs from Sintra in the summer months.

Golf is BIG in Portugal and there are many great golf courses within a 20 minute drive of Quinta do Scoto.
Belas Clube de Campo is just 5 km away, known for its excellent variety of holes.
To find out more, go to http://www.belasgolf.com.
Lisbon Sports Club golf course is also near Belas – see http://www.lisbonclub.com.
Penha Longa Golf Course is 15 km away and is ranked in the top 30 courses in Continental Europe – see http://www.penhalonga.com/golf_e.html.
For other golf courses in the area, see http://beloura.pestanagolf.com/home.php. and http://www.palacioestorilhotel.com/ENG/golf.asp.

If you are interested in clay pigeon shooting, there is an excellent club located just 5 km away where you will get a warm welcome from the Cleto family. Coaching can be arranged with Paulo Cleto who happens to be the Portuguese Sporting Champion. For more information, go to http://www.casalalentejano.com/english.html.

Alfama district, Lisbon

The Autódromo of Estoril motor racing course, just 15km away from the Quinta, plays host to the Grand Prix Motorbike World Championship, top-level single-seater, sports car, Dallara World Series and touring car events throughout the year. For more information, see http://www.circuito-estoril.pt/index.php.

One of the great things about Portugal is the fact that there is a café almost on every corner, where you can grab a coffee and pastry, and there are many, many restaurants where you can eat out at a very reasonable cost (dinner + wine typically 15 euros per person). Near the Quinta, there are 5 cafés and 4 restaurants within walking distance, and many more just a short drive away.

There are many local shops just 2 km away in Rio de Mouro, including supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, hairdressers, post office, and small gift and clothes shops. There is also the newly opened Forum Shopping Centre 10 minutes drive away that has many well-known shops and a large multi-screen cinema.

If you enjoy walking, there are great walks into the hills around the Quinta with fabulous views towards the coastline. The hills of Sintra and the rugged coast line of the Atlantic provide further variety to satisfy the quest to run up an appetite!
